"Our sole vocation is to restore the sick to health as rapidly, gently and permanently as possible, using easily understood principles, including that of the Law of Similars, or that like cures like."
Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) , who formulated the laws of modern homoeopathy.
The course is of four years duration, and consists of ten weekends each academic year – from September to June inclusive. In addition, there is a considerable degree of directed, home based study (about 12-15 hours a week) in the form of reading, research and written assignments, and (in the final year) – a project.
We monitor your work throughout the course by a programme of continuous assessment , Materia Medica tests and constructive feed-back from your individual tutor or supervisor.
Anyone who really wants to know more about homoeopathy and who has the time to study, can apply for an interview. If you have passion and commitment you should do well. We welcome students from all backgrounds.
The Academic work
Classes are small and informal, with plenty of time for debate, discussion and individual attention. Every student is allocated a personal tutor who will offer encouragement, guidance and support throughout the course – no-one is left to work in isolation.
The main areas of study include Materia Medica (our homoeopathic remedies) and the principles and philosophy of homoeopathy and natural healing. Various complementary disciplines aimed at broadening the perception and understanding of natural healing, are also covered. The student is taught the gentle art of case-taking, and how to prescribe for both acute and chronic conditions. In the second and third years, a thorough grounding is also given in the medical sciences of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and their relationship to homoeopathic practice, in order to further understand health and the process of disease.
The Practical work
After the competition of the first year, you will be required to make arrangements with local homoeopaths to sit in with them, and observe case-taking. This is an invaluable and traditional part of the learning process that complements the academic work of the class room.
In the final two years of the course, there is a much greater emphasis on clinical work. You will be allocated an in-house Supervisor, to whom you will bring your cases, and will be guided in the practical skills of case-taking and their management.
We also run low-cost homoeopathy clinics in Lancing and Chichester where students will gain experience in a supervised setting. These clinics are open to the public.
For appointments, please phone:
Sue Baker 01903 785763(Lancing)
Sally Nunn 01903 884466(Chichester)
These two systems in tandem, save students considerable time and expense whilst supporting them as they begin to put their knowledge into practice.
Qualifications
On successful completion of the four year course you will be awarded the qualification of Licentiate of the South Downs School of Homoeopathy (SDS Hom). This entitles you to set up in practice as a professional homoeopath.
Graduates of the school are also encouraged to apply for registration, either with The Society of Homeopaths (RS Hom) or with The Alliance of Registered Homeopaths (MARH)
